Newcastle University – Combined Heat and Power Unit Installation

Newcastle University
In January 2024, Helidragon was commissioned by Newcastle University to document the delivery and installation of a new combined heat and power (CHP) unit as part of the university's investment in sustainable energy infrastructure.
The project involved capturing the arrival and load-in of the new energy generation equipment onto the university campus. Due to the size of the unit and the lifting operation involved, sections of the surrounding road network had to be closed to allow the equipment to be transported and positioned safely on site. To minimise disruption in the city centre, much of the operation took place overnight.
What made this project particularly interesting was the location. The installation site was situated adjacent to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), home to a helicopter landing pad used by the Great North Air Ambulance Service. As a result, extensive planning and communication were required between Newcastle University, the RVI facilities management team, health and safety personnel, lifting contractors and the air ambulance service to ensure the work could proceed safely without affecting hospital operations.
